PROMISES, PROMISES: I asked a bunch of writers who had best sellers in 2009 if they had made any reading-­related New Year’s resolutions. Some were willing to recklessly commit to new courses of literary action — but only after I promised not to do a follow-up report next year.

Jennifer Weiner (“Best Friends Forever”) promises to be nicer to Russians: “I will read ‘Anna Karenina’ and stop using Gary Shteyngart’s last name as a curse word. I will not cyberstalk Katherine Dunn or Tabitha King in hopes of convincing them to publish new novels and will instead confine myself to the occasional plaintive blog post.”
